Church of God – Basic Fundamental Beliefs
The Church of God Lexington KY is first and foremost a Christian church. Their vision and mission is to “Transform Culture by Being the Body of Christ”. The Church of God was founded in the year 1866 with the principles of Christ revealed in the Word of God, the Bible. The doctrines and practices of the church are based on the teachings of Jesus Christ. The foundation of faith, the practice of the Scriptures and the vital experiences of its constituents are scripturally oriented.
The fundamental belief of the Church of God Lexington KY is that God is the eternal King of the universe. They believe in one God, the Father, eternally existing, who is a Spirit, a personal being of supreme intelligence, knowledge, love, justice, power and authority. They also believe that God resides in the highest heaven where His will is performed continually and is eternal in existence and infinite in power. In addition, they believe that God has an extraordinary plan for His children that will culminate becoming literal members of His family. Their church does not embrace the doctrine of the trinity but believe that God is a family currently consisting of God the Father and Jesus Christ, His Son.
Baptism is a foundational doctrine for the Church of God. All who wish to be followers of Christ must be baptized and their baptism must be preceded by sincere repentance. They believe that a person’s baptism a physical act that is an outward expression of their faith in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The Church of God Lexington KY believes that the gospel is a message of the good news of the Kingdom of God powerfully proclaimed by Jesus Christ. The Kingdom of God will reflect a period of great peace and prosperity where God will put a new spirit in the citizens and write His law upon their hearts. They also believe that the Bible, which is God’s instruction book for mankind, provides a glimpse into God’s kingdom.
For the Church of God, sin is transgression of God’s immutable law and that the consequence of sin is eternal death. But because of Jesus Christ, the penalty of sin has been paid thus making salvation and entrance into God’s Kingdom available to all who would claim that sacrifice and yield to God’s will in their lives. Salvation begins with the person’s repentance and is a conditional gift from God and will not give it to anyone who would hold it in contempt. For them, salvation will be given to those who turn from sin, accept God’s authority in their lives, and claim the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
